Military Superannuation is not an old age pension - it is a retirement pay earned and paid for by veterans and ex-service men and women of Australia's Defence Forces. After spending their working lives in the service of Australia, all they ask for is a reasonable standard of living in their retirement
The median military superannuation pension, usually benefiting a couple, is under $20,000 and is taxed. The Old Age pension for couples is $26,338 and tax free... Why shouldn't veterans enjoy similar benefits?
Estimates are that the first year cost (gross) of under $20m for indexation that protects military super pensions. That's a very small part of the proposed budget. However, veterans acknowledge that, as with all pensions, the costs will increase over time. But, so does revenue.
Veterans are men and women of the Australian Defence Forces who have served in war and operational theatres in service to Australia and its people.
They deserve our support and gratitude.
